How do I setup PPPoE for Macsense Routers?

Macsense routers are capable of handling Static, Dynamic and PPPoE connections. Point-to-Point over Ethernet, which is a dynamic IP connection, was developed so that ISPs can control the pool of IP addresses that it hands out. ISPs will give the user an IP with a specific lease time, which will drop the connection after a period of time expires.

The following instructions are for those users that have a PPPoE account. We suggest using just one computer to initially setup the router and test that the Internet connection is working. Such PPPoE ISPs are PacBell, Earthlink/Mindspring, BellSouth, Bell Atlantic, Southwestern Bell, Bell Sympatico and Verizon, among others.

1. As our routers fully support the PPPoE protocol, the user must uninstall any PPPoE software that the ISPs had you install. Enternet 100/300 must be disabled in the Mac Extensions Manager and deleted on PCs. The WinPoet protocol/adapter must be deleted from all PCs for them to work with our routers. The MacPoet Init and MacPoet Module extensions must be deleted on all Macs for them to work with our routers. If there are any traces of these programs on your computers, they will cause connection issues. Back up these files if there is ever a need to connect the computer directly to the modem.

2. Connect your computer to one of the Router's LAN ports and verify that you have either a green (100Mbps) or amber 10Mbps) LAN link light.

3. On your Mac, go into your TCP/IP control panel and verify that you are set for, Connect via "Ethernet" and Configure Using "DHCP Server". With PPPoE connections, we advise inputting the DNS addresses from you ISP. If you do not have these addresses, you can obtain them from your ISP or from the Status Monitor box from within the XRouter configuration pages, only after you’ve connected to the Internet. If you are in Basic mode, it will not allow you to input them. Go to User Mode under the Edit menu; click on Advance and save the setting. Now you can enter the DNS addresses.

4. On your PC, open your Network Control Panel and double-click on the TCP/IP protocol for your NIC card. Here, you will choose either a dynamic or manual setting for your IP. Choose the Gateway tab and enter 192.168.1.1. Choose your DNS tab and enter a unique name for your computer in the DNS field. Enter your ISP's DNS addresses into the DNS field and click add. Do this for all of your DNS addresses. Then click OK and the computer will prompt you to restart. After the restart, you can configure your XRouter for a PPPoE connection.

5. Now open your browser, either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator is preferred. It will try to find your home page, please let it time out or click Stop to cancel. In the URL field at the top, type in the router's IP of 192.168.1.1 and press the Return/Enter key. A box should come up asking for a username and a password. Leave the username blank and enter "admin" in the password field and click OK. The password must be in lower case without the quotes.

6. The One Page Setup screen of the Router will appear. Please note, you are not online yet, you are accessing html pages inside the Router. Click the radial button for PPPoE. Enter your username and password given by your ISP. If you are unsure of these, please contact your ISP to verify this important information before continuing. Enable "Connect-on-demand" and click the Apply button to save settings. Once it is done, the XRouter will reset, and then you should be back on the One Page Setup.

7. Quit your browser and now you should be able to get online by double-clicking your browser icon.

Note: These instructions assume you're Internet connection is working properly and the router is running the latest firmware. In older firmware, configurations for PPPoE were on it's own page.
